Obtaining and applying foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis, and Inuit for my students is my highest priority goal for myself. In my Field III experience I had the pleasure of teaching during Métis week and taught an art lesson that ran for the entire week. I provided an opportunity for students to develop their knowledge about Métis values and a Métis art style that is both contemporary and inspired by historical art styles. For this lesson we watched a read loud of The Giving Tree by Leah Dorion and had a conversation about Métis values and pointillism art before we started the actual painting process. Each day we painted in a different image to correspond with a value we discussed and thought about how that value works in our lives and how those values give us strength. I’ve also included a visual essay I did for my Indigenous Education class at University where I reflected on what I had been learning about residential schools and their legacy, as well as how I have been decolonizing my own mind to decolonize my pedagogy.
