During Field III I designed a long range plan for the Geometry unit for my grade 1 students. One stand out lesson and assessment I did was a tangram class book the students helped to make. After multiple lessons learning what tangrams were and reading two books about tangrams, we read a mentor text and the students used paper tangrams and black construction paper to make a tangram shape on a page to be bound in a book they could look at for the rest of the year. By using a mentor text for a read-aloud and discussion and hands-on manipulatives, we were able to develop skills in literacy and numeracy. The text I chose reflected where they were at in their reading skills, meeting them where they are at with an age-appropriate book. I assessed their work using a checklist assessment that included a row for mini-conferencing to gather written and verbal evidence of learning. I’ve attached the lesson plan, the checklist rubric, and an excerpt from my Field III Partner Teacher assessment that touches on my assessment strategies. I’ve also included a page from my Advice For A Future (Super) Teacher book from Field II which a student made that speaks to how that student engaged in my math lessons that fostered an understanding of the intended learning outcomes.
